The Tampa Bay Chapter of the Florida Council of Nurse-Midwives held a reception honoring Charles S. Mahan, MD, FACOG on January 21, 2011. Dr. Mahan received the inaugural Louis M. Hellman Midwifery Partnership Award in 2010. The Hellman Award is a joint effort of the ACNM, the ACNM Foundation and the Midwifery Business Network that recognizes a physician who is a supporter of midwifery practice. Dr. Mahan is the former Director of the Florida Department of Health and a former dean of the University of South Florida College of Public Health. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Childbearing Centers (now the AABC) and the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing. He was a co-developer of the nurse-midwifery program at the University of Florida. He is now the senior scientist for the Lawton and Rhea Chiles Center for Healthy Mothers and Healthy Babies.
The evening was attended by many novice and experienced midwives including special guests: Denise Henning, President Midwifery Business Network; Dorothea Lang, former ACNM President; Anne Richter, former Region III Representative to the ACNM Board of Directors; Bettie Ann Daviss of the Ontario Midwives Association and Elsie Wilson, former dean of the Frontier School.
